Last Sunday my family and I went to see the Chieftains play at West Conn. Had tickets for the lawn so we arrived an hour and a half early to stake out a good place. My mom made homemade sushi and spring rolls and there were chips and salsa and also cherries, so we had a little picnic whilst we waited. I took some time to wander around the concert grounds, which with the lake reminded me very much of being at the Strawberry festival in Yosemite. The key difference was that the crowd at this concert was mainly composed of yuppies from Connecticut.
I’ve never really listened to the Chieftains too much before, despite having some of their CDs. I like celtic music in general, but their performance was a little too rambling for me. They mainly were just jamming for two hours; there was very little in the way of discrete songs. Through they did had a female singer who was really good. There was also a special surprise Irish stepdancing troupe (a surprise to the Chieftains too, it seemed) that jumped up on stage at one point. But they got totally pwned by the two guys in the band who could stepdance much better and made the troupe look like a pack of n00blars.
