We needed a fast machine for video recording on short notice at work, so I built one this weekend. With the exception of the RAID controller, plugging everything together and configuring it was pretty easy. It makes no sense to me that you can grab a bunch of random parts from different manufacturers, connect them up, and have a machine that boots. Hardware engineers are just smarter than us softies.
Big pile of parts
The emptiness of this case is daunting
There are about a billion little wires in here. When I turn it on, it boots. There’s no way this works based on any laws of physics.
I have to clean my room
The nVidia GTX 570 is the size of a netbook.
The BEAST’s specs:
- 4 TB disk – 2 TB in RAID0
- AMD Phenom II 1100 – 6 cores @ 3.3 Ghz
- 8 GB 1600 Mhz HyperX RAM
- GTX 570 1280 MB RAM
Can record gameplay footage of ROBLOX running at 1920×1200, lossless capture at 30 FPS – 80MB/s. Mission accomplished!
