Programming a quicksort routine in assembly all day for my ee108b project. I was thinking about the idea that it is much more difficult to write a program to solve a problem then it is to actually go ahead and solve it by hand. The morass of 1′s and 0′s above, for example, are MIPs instructions for a program that finds the sum of the square of all ints from 0 to 100. It’s basically a 768 bit number. Finding the 768 digit binary number to solve this problem is probably strictly harder than solving the problem itself. Is finding all the 768 bit numbers that solve the sum of squares problem strictly more difficult than that? I mean can it be proven in some formal way? These things I think about while I’m combing over my assembly code to see where I wrote sw $t3, 0($t8) instead of sw $t8, 0($t3)… Too much Godel, Escher, Bach I think (damn you Brendan).
