Senior Formal

May 16, 2005

My busy social schedule continued last night with Mirlo special dinner at 6pm and senior formal at 9:30. Mirlo special dinner was more fun than I thought it would be. I was a little overdressed in my tux since I was going to the formal directly afterwards. The Mirlo people had tasty Buca di Beppo’s food and candles floating in water that were really fun to play with. Dave Emme showed off some of his homemade videos and they were pretty entertaining. I was thinking about it a bit today and I think I might try to do some stop motion animation films with my digital camera when I get a chunk of time. This probably won’t be until the summer.

Senior formal this year was held at SBC park. You might think that a baseball stadium is a really strange place to hold a formal event. I would agree with you. In years past the formal has been held at such awesome locations as the Monterey Aquarium and the SF MoMA. The real problem was the most of the party was restricted to happening along a very long corridor, and there were a lot of people. The whole event was a little too much like the typical senior prom for my liking. I was expecting something a little more classy I suppose. This would be in contrast to (DJ + disco balls + gangsta rap), though there were other things going on. We saw a really awful band try to play Simon and Garfunkel – that was just painful to listen to. Mainly the thing to do was to walk around and say “hi” to people you vaguely recognize from IHUM and PWR sections that you might have been in four years ago. Jo and I spent half the night trying to find Kejia, but she eluded us. The view from the park was pretty good though. It sits right on the waterside next to the bay bridge. We left the party thinking we might go find a cute place to get desert, but it was 1:45am by that point so we drove home instead.

The whole evening had the stereotypical prom theme happening. The only things missing were that we didn’t drink like the apochalypse was coming, we didn’t break it down to hip hop grooves, and we didn’t stay out until dawn. It’s easy to complain, though. The night was rather memorable on the whole, which I guess is the idea of senior formal, so in that respect it was a success.
